Things You Need To Know

What is a [STAGE 1] Exactly?

What is Stage 1?

Stage 1 is the most basic and non-invasive level of chip tuning, which is a process of modifying a vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) to improve its performance.

What happens in Stage 1?

In Stage 1, the tuner (the person doing the modification) only makes changes to the software settings within the ECU. They edit certain parameters, such as fuel injection timing, boost pressure, and ignition timing, to optimize the engine’s performance. This process is also known as “remapping” or “reflashing” the ECU.

No physical modifications

The key thing to note is that no physical modifications are made to the engine or other components in Stage 1. No new parts are installed, and no mechanical changes are made. It’s purely a software update.

Sometimes, a performance air filter is added

In some cases, a performance air filter may be installed in addition to the ECU tune. This is not a required modification, but it can help improve airflow and enhance the performance gains achieved through the ECU tune.

That’s it!

In summary, Stage 1 chip tuning involves editing the ECU’s software parameters to improve performance, with no physical modifications to the engine or other components. It’s a simple, non-invasive process that can provide a noticeable increase in power and torque.

What is a [ STAGE 2 ] Exactly?

What is Stage 2?

Stage 2 is a more advanced level of chip tuning that builds upon the modifications made in Stage 1. It includes the ECU tune, but also involves some physical modifications to the engine and/or other components to further enhance performance.

What happens in Stage 2?

In Stage 2, the tuner still makes changes to the ECU’s software parameters, just like in Stage 1. However, they also add some physical modifications to support the increased power and torque. These modifications can vary depending on the vehicle and the tuner, but common examples include:

  • Performance intake system: A high-flow intake system is installed to draw in more air and improve engine breathing. This can include a performance air filter, a new intake manifold, or other upgrades.
  • Cat-back exhaust system: A high-performance exhaust system is installed to reduce backpressure and allow the engine to breathe more efficiently. This can include a new downpipe, catalytic converter, and exhaust muffler.
  • Intercooler upgrade: An upgraded intercooler is installed to improve cooling of the charged air, allowing for more boost pressure and increased power.
  • Boost pressure increase: The turbocharger or supercharger is modified to increase boost pressure, which allows for more power and torque.

ECU tune is optimized for the new modifications

The ECU tune is then optimized to take advantage of the new physical modifications. The tuner adjusts the fueling, ignition, and boost pressure settings to work in harmony with the upgraded components. You can also add cool features like pop&bang, launch control, etc

More power and torque, but also more complexity

Stage 2 chip tuning offers more significant power and torque gains compared to Stage 1, but it also introduces more complexity. The physical modifications require more labor and expertise, and may also require additional maintenance and upkeep.

That’s it!

In summary, Stage 2 chip tuning involves both ECU software modifications and physical upgrades to the engine and other components to achieve more significant performance gains. It’s a more advanced level of tuning that requires more expertise and labor, but can provide substantial increases in power and torque.

What is a [ STAGE 3 ] Exactly?

What is Stage 3?

Stage 3 is the highest level of chip tuning, involving extensive modifications to the engine, turbocharger, and other components to achieve extreme power and torque gains. This stage is designed for serious enthusiasts and racing applications.

Engine Modifications

The engine undergoes significant modifications to handle the increased power and torque, including:

  • Engine block upgrade: The engine block is upgraded to a more robust unit, capable of handling higher cylinder pressures and boost levels.
  • Cylinder head upgrade: The cylinder head is upgraded to a high-performance unit, featuring larger valves, improved porting, and increased flow rates.
  • Camshaft upgrade: The camshaft is upgraded to a high-performance unit, featuring more aggressive cam profiles and increased lift.
  • Forged engine internals: The engine’s internals, including pistons, connecting rods, and crankshaft, are upgraded to forged units, ensuring durability and reliability at extreme power levels.

Turbocharger Upgrade

The turbocharger is upgraded to an even more aggressive unit, capable of producing extremely high boost pressures and flow rates, such as:

  • Large frame turbocharger: A large frame turbocharger is installed, featuring a larger compressor wheel and turbine wheel, capable of producing over 30psi of boost pressure.
  • Ball-bearing turbocharger: A ball-bearing turbocharger is installed, featuring improved reliability and durability at high speeds.

Fuel System Upgrades

The fuel system is upgraded to support the increased power and torque, including:

  • High-flow fuel pump: A high-flow fuel pump is installed, capable of delivering more fuel volume and pressure to the engine.
  • Upgraded fuel injectors: The fuel injectors are upgraded to high-flow units, capable of delivering more fuel to the engine at higher pressures.
  • Fuel rail upgrade: The fuel rail is upgraded to a high-pressure unit, capable of handling increased fuel pressure.

Engine Management

The engine management system is upgraded to handle the increased power and torque, including:

  • Advanced engine computer: A high-performance engine computer is installed, featuring advanced processing power and tuning capabilities.
  • Custom tuning: The engine is custom-tuned to optimize performance, taking into account the various upgrades and modifications.

That’s it!

In summary, Stage 3 chip tuning involves extensive modifications to the engine, turbocharger, and fuel system to achieve extreme power and torque gains. This stage is designed for serious enthusiasts and racing applications, and requires a deep understanding of engine dynamics and tuning.
